Natural Skin Care Tips For Your Newborn

Every mother knows the importance of keeping her baby’s skin soft and smooth. When looking for the best ways to care for your newborns skin you should consider the importance of proper cleansing and moisturizing with a natural lotion. This will not only keep your baby clean and fresh, but will aid in the prevention of harmful bacteria and infection.

Here are four natural skin care tips to keeping your baby clean and healthy:

1. Umbilical Cord Care -It is important for you to keep your newborns umbilical cord clean in order to prevent infection. Clean the base of the umbilical cord twice a day with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not prevent the cord from being exposed to air. You can fold your baby’s diaper down to expose the umbilical cord, which is necessary in order for the cord to properly dry up and fall off.

2. Baby Bath Time – Sponge baths are the best way to clean your newborn while the umbilical cord is still attached. After the umbilical cord has fallen off, you can begin cleaning your baby in a bath. The bath water should be lukewarm and soap free in order to avoid skin irritation and dryness. Keep baths limited to three times a week and no longer than ten minutes. You should also frequently wash your baby’s face, neck, hands and bottom with a warm washcloth.

3. Baby body lotion – The best time to apply a moisturizing baby lotion is after bath time, which will allow your baby’s skin to fully absorb the lotion. Unless your baby has ultra-dry skin, you should stay away from baby oil and other greasy lotions that will clog your baby’s glands and may cause rashes.

4. Diapers & Wipes -When changing your baby’s diaper, be sure to use a clean and sterilized changing area. Use alcohol-free, hypoallergenic baby wipes when cleaning your baby’s diaper area and look for wipes with aloe and vitamin E to provide additional moisture. Be careful to gently wipe your baby’s bottom from front to back to insure proper cleanliness.
